Aims
Within the Humanities Department, we aim to encourage the students to develop a learning ethos by developing a range of skills to equip the students and enable them to learn in a variety of ways. This will allow the student to reach their potential and to strive for excellence.
Through the subjects taught within Humanities, the students will be able to investigate relevant issues and consider different viewpoints. The students will be encouraged to develop their understanding of the physical and human world around them. They will focus on local, national and international issues, as well as looking at how the past events can influence the future.
Overall we would like to help the student to become more knowledgeable and an active citizen who values and can contribute to the world.
The Department
We have specialist teachers to deliver the courses in Geography, History, R.E. and Humanities. The team having vast experience in providing excellence in learning and have continued to raise standards. We are committed to maintaining high expectations and the positive ethos of T.V.A.
The Curriculum
At Key Stage 3, the students study the individual subjects of Geography, History and R.E. These are each delivered in a 75 minute lesson on a weekly basis. In Year 9 Geography and History are delivered over 3 x 6 week periods, while R.E. is delivered over 2 x 6 week periods. This allows the Year 9 student to start their G.C.S.E. course after Easter in Year 9.
The G.C.S.E. course starting in Year 9 is taught initially twice a week and then from Year 10 once a week in 75 minute lessons.
All students follow a detailed Scheme of Work for each subject, from which the individual teacher will develop and individualise their teaching to meet the needs of the student.
Homework is set to reinforce the learning and to develop further understanding of the topics and issues.
