YASIG Fundraising

A group of Year 8 pupils ran a retail shop during break time and lunch in order to try and raise money for YASIG (Young and Safe in Gainsborough) which is a charity organisation providing positive opportunities for young people from the ages 11 – 24 years.

I am pleased to report that the students managed to raise £100 towards the great work which YASIG are involved in. On our visit to YASIG we were treated to a guided tour to look at the excellent facilities and opportunities that are available for young people.

Here at TVA we are happy to work and support the work of YASIG and wish them well with future projects. If you have never been and are looking to get involved in new exciting projects as well as meet and make new friends I urge you to visit them on Bridge Street.

F1 in Schools UK National Final

Loads of luck to our F1 in Schools Team - Adrenaline Rush at the UK National Final.

Update - 20/03/2012

The team have performed very well over the two day competition and performed a range of presentations including verbal, engineering, display and design scrutineering.

They have competed against other 14-19 year olds and were the youngest team there.

They have achieved 3rd place in the Rookie class for new teams. This class was made up of 12 teams.

They have also achieved the seventh fastest car in the UK out of 20 teams.

This is a fantastic achievement considering there were about 200 teams entered at the start of the competition.

National Citizen Service

What is it?

The National Citizenship Service is a three week scheme year 11s in England can attend from June to August. It aims to teach kids new skills, meet new people and try activities such as trekking, climbing and rafting. Plus kids get a certificate signed by the Prime Minister.

There are 29 different organisations providing the government run camps; mainly youth associations and charities, for example the YMCA. Providers vary from area to area.

What do you get?

Week one (residential): Outdoor activities focusing on personal and social development, eg, trekking, climbing and rafting.
Week two (residential): Team tasks to help the local community and skill sessions such as music and drama.
Week three (local area): Design a project to make a positive change to local communities.

TVA Ski Trip 2012

Fourteen pupils and two staff departed for Torgon in Switzerland on the last Saturday of half term for 6 days of skiing. Everyone arrived safely and after only 5 hours sleep, where thrust upon the slopes for 5 hours of intensive training in how to point your skiis down a hill whilst staying upright - oh and don't forget - learning how to stop safely.

For some of the group, it was a quick refresher before they were off over into France and into the Snow Park with its challenging jumps and trick skiing. For others it was the gentle slopes in front of the Ski Centre for a couple of days before they too ventured up the chair lift and over into France - where large plates of fries were waiting for them at lunchtime.

The evenings were spent not resting in front of the TV, but snow shoeing, on the climbing wall, playing football and night skiing. After tea each night, Mrs Bower and Mr Gibson held a team talk in which the trials of the day were recounted and the nominations for 'Wally of the Day' were voted on. Most of the pupils were begging to go to bed early as the exhaustion from a hard, but pleasant days skiing set in.

We were blessed with powder snow on the first day then beautiful sunshine and lovely skiing conditions for the whole week.

The pupils were all impeccably behaved and we had a pretty easy week of it - but don't tell anyone!

Don't miss out next year on going on such a fantastic experience, as most of the pupils will confirm, as many of them come year after year. It's a bargain price at around £600 when you consider we get to fly and you have ski lessons for 5 hours a day as well as all the other activities. Young Americans Performance 2012

The Young Americans visited the Trent Valley Academy during the February half term for a 3 day workshop. Children from all across Gainsborough attended the workshop and learnt new skills such as singing and dancing. It ended with an amazing show on the Saturday evening watched by over 190 family and friends.

Anyone who saw the final performance will have been blown away by the ways in which the students were inspired to deliver such a high quality production. TVA would like to thank the local families who hosted the Young Americans while they were with us. F1 in Schools

F1 in schools is a competition in which 9 to 19 year olds use computer skills and CAD/CAM software to design and create a scale F1 car. The project involves schools from across the world.

TVA have won the recent regional finals earning a place in the national finals.

We were delighted to welcome Dr Noorzaman Rashid, the Chairman of E-ACT to our academy last week. He has taken a month out of his busy schedule to visit all of the E-ACT academies to get to know the staff and students on a personal level.

Following a full tour of the buildings Dr Rashid met a group of senior students and was then interviewed and filmed by the Young Journalists from Y9. They also recorded the day in photographs and film.

'Live and Learn like a Champion’supports schools and their pupils in developing a sporting and cultural legacy based on the seven Olympic and Paralympic Values:

Live and Learn like a Champion involves children and young people engaging with their own
Legacy Log which focuses on bringing to life the seven Values through activities related to
Sport, the Arts, Music, Volunteering and Leadership.

As they progress through their Legacy Log their achievements are recognised and
celebrated as they collect their stickers and are awarded their Bronze, Silver and Gold Medal
Certificates.

The medal table will show progress across the school in relation to pupil engagement
with the Legacy Logs, highlighting the number of pupils gaining their Bronze, Silver and
Gold awards.

Year 10 Work Experience

Clothes Show Live

Towards the end of last year we took a group of Year 10 and 11 fashion and textiles students to clothes show live.

We met the cast of Hollyoaks and George Lamb. Several of our students were also “spotted” by Select Models agency.

We watched the catwalk performance called “A night in the department store”, saw Kimberley Walsh perform a song as well as The Risk from the X Factor.

Annual John Coupland Hospital Visit

On Tuesday 13th December students from TVA visited John Coupland Hospital to deliver gifts and sing Christmas carols to the patients and staff.

The event provided all with a wonderful morning. Students spent time talking to both the staff and patients who were all extremely touched by the kindness shown by the school.

TVA Christmas Hamper Appeal

On Friday 16th December we held a non-uniform day in support for Children in Need with the option of bringing in an item to contribute to a hamper for the Princes Trust and Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue Christmas Hamper Appeal.

We had an excellent response from students and staff and have raised £818.76 for Children in Need. We have also filled 17 hampers which will be distributed to families and individuals in need in the local area.

Headstone Restoration

Trent Valley Academy pupils recently attended a ceremony in Gainsborough General Cemetery to mark the restoration of the headstones of two WWI Royal Flying Corps Officers. They were 33 Squadron officers tasked with defence against Zeppelin raids. The crosses on the headstones of Lt Harman, from London, and Lt Van Staden, from South Africa, were broken about 10 years ago. TVA worked with "The Friends of the Cemetery Chapel" to arrange the restoration. We were supported by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the Gainsborough branch of the Royal British Legion.

Squadron Leader Steward Staudinger from present day 33 Squadron travelled from RAF Benson in Oxfordshire to take part. Many thanks to the Lincolnshire Co-operative Society who funded half of the cost and their masons carried out the work.

Cooking Club Make Gingerbread Houses

It has been a busy term in the after school cooking club, practicing knife skills to butterfly chicken and putting a whole new twist on the British classic of toad in the hole aswell as making many other tasty tempting dishes.

The term was finished off by getting into the Christmas spirit making and icing ginger bread houses. The regular members spent the time learning the precarious art of balancing icing and gingerbread walls long enough for all to set, and a few members were convinced they would never make it as a house builder! The creative festive mood descended as decoration proceeded and as the icing sugar landed softly on the houses students were ready for a snowy holiday.

Young Americans International Out-Reach Tour

We are pleased to announce that the extremely popular, ‘Young Americans International Out-Reach Tour’, is due to return to Trent Valley Academy in February 2012.

These workshops will take place on Thursday 16th, Friday 17th, Saturday 18th February 2012.

The age groups entitled to participate are from 8 – 18 years. Your child will be required on Thursday afternoon until 9.00pm, all day Friday until 7.00pm and from 2.45 pm until 9.15pm on Saturday.

The price of the three-day experience is £55 per pupil.

If you wish for your child to participate in the Outreach Programme please call Chloe Bridge on 01427 612411 and a letter will be sent out to you.

The Trent Valley Academy is also looking for families to host the Young Americans for two nights. A great host simply makes sure they get enough sleep, food and are on time to the workshops every day. Call for more information on becoming a homestay for the Young Americans or alternatively download the letter from here and return to TVA.

Lincoln College have kindly agreed to sponsor this visit.

Annie Performance Tickets

Tickets for this year’s performance of “Annie” will go on sale from Monday 28th November 2011. Public performances are every evening from Monday 12th December until Friday 16th December 2011 and will commence at 7.00pm, with doors opening at 6.30pm. The performance on Saturday 17th December will commence at 4.00pm, with doors opening at 3.30pm. The cost of tickets is £4.00 for adults and £3.00 for children/concessions.

Tickets sell out quickly, so buy your ticket(s) early to avoid disappointment.

Please read the information below about how tickets will be sold for these evening (public) performances:-

• These are on sale at the Admin office during breaktime and lunchtime.

Children buying tickets

Please send your payment in cash, or by cheque, made payable to Trent Valley Academy, in an envelope marked with the following:-

• Your child’s name and form group
• The number of tickets you require
• Whether they are for adults or children/OAP’s
• Whether you require space for a wheelchair or a seat for someone with limited mobility
• Which night you would like them for.
Adults buying tickets
• If you want to buy your ticket(s) personally, you can call at the Admin office during Academy hours.
• If you wish to reserve tickets you can do so by phoning the Academy.
• Please remember to tell the office staff if you require space for a wheelchair, etc, as above.
• Payment for reserved tickets must be made the following day
either by yourself or your child, at the Admin office.

If you are sending payment for reserved tickets with your child,
please mark your envelope in the following way:-

• Your child’s name and form group
• Write “PAYMENT FOR RESERVED TICKETS” on the front
• The name of the person who reserved them
• Which night they have been reserved for.
We try to make it as easy as possible for you to buy tickets. Do let us know if you have any problems. Please take care of your ticket(s) as replacements cannot be given.
Refreshments will be available during the interval and a raffle will be held for school funds*. We hope that you enjoy watching the production as much as the students enjoy performing it.

* We would welcome any contribution in the form of a raffle prize either in advance or on the evening.

TVA Results 2011

For the third year since it opened in September 2008, Trent Valley Academy has once again delivered record results. Making a six per cent improvement on 2010, 40% TVA students now have 5A*-C grades including English and Maths and a massive 71% have five or more A*-C grades. This is up 18 percentage points on last year.

What’s more, not one TVA student has left school without a qualification. Wendy Carrick, Principal, is particularly pleased about this and commented:

‘We work really closely with our students so that they study appropriate qualifications and are successful in their exams. Clearly some students achieve more than others but we encourage all the students to be the best they can and take full advantage of our expertise and support while they are in full-time education. I think this year group has proved that they have listened and worked hard to achieve their potential. It is a milestone in a young person’s life and as an academy we have succeeded if our students can move onto the next level with good qualifications, whether that’s college, employment-based training or a job.’

Individual students who performed exceptionally well include Jessica Farrant, Jade Folan, Ryan Goddard, Katie Hearn, Tyler Ley, Rebekah Parrott, Sophie Potts, Andrew Stainton, Debbie Sweetman, Charlotte Wilson and Nathan Wright who all got the equivalent of 17 or more GCSE passes at Grade C and above and Matthew Warwick who scored 14.5 passes all at Grade A* or A.

Outgoing Executive Principal, Tom Megahy said that he is proud of the way in which all the students had approached their learning and exams:

‘They are a superb bunch of young people and it was clear that they were determined to work hard and do well. The staff, especially those who focus on supporting Y11, are highly experienced and always go ‘the extra mile’. Now we are established in the new school these excellent relationships, support systems and determination have combined to bring the success for which we strive. I congratulate every individual for their achievements and wish them well for the future.’
