Every Child Matters

Working alongside other Children’s Services, we are committed to achieving excellence in respect of all five outcomes of the Children Act (2004).

Examples of how we are doing this include:

Making a Positive Contribution

  • Established customs of students taking positions of responsibility (i.e. prefects, monitors, Head Girl/ Boy) and participating actively in Student Councils
  • Developing active citizenship in the local community and at national and international level
  • Working with a wide range of partners from different sectors
  • Community placements for students, including work supporting primary schools in Arts, Physical Education and Literacy

Ensuring Economic Well-Being

  • Increasing the proportion of local people entering further and higher education
  • Provision of clear progression pathways 14 – 19
  • Providing training in personal financial management, career action planning and the role of ICT in the workplace

Being healthy

  • An environmentally friendly building design with an energy efficient system
  • “Healthy School” status for cooking our own food on site and providing healthy meals to primary partner schools
  • From 2009 we will provide breakfast facilities for students who wish to use this service

Enjoying and Achieving

  • The curriculum places an emphasis on investigation, experimentation and risk taking
  • The new building will provide a stimulating learning environment
  • Excellent ICT facilities with wide access and links to home as well as other community learning centres
  • Placements and visits

Staying Safe

  • Movement within the new building will be electronically controlled and monitored with high quality surveillance systems
  • Unless as part of their learning, from 2009, students will not be allowed to leave the site during the school day
  • The Personal, Health, Social, Citizenship and Enterprise Education curriculum explores and raises awareness of bullying, racism, drugs and sexual health
  • Successful anti-bullying strategies such as the deployment of students as Peer Counsellors  and “Buddies”
  • Internet Safety Policy and acceptable use policy
