Positive Learning

Our vision for teaching and learning is one based on:

  • Personalised and flexible approaches n   Appropriate grouping, including setting by ability
  • A culture of high expectations and aspirations
  • Varied and challenging work
  • Involvement of students in the assessment process
  • Collaboration with partners in education,  training and business

Key stage 3

From 2009, the curriculum will provide greater subject integration and specialists will organise learning into broad areas of experience. This, in addition to the revised school day, will reduce the number of teachers a student will encounter each week. Students will pursue a broad based Humanities programme while Technology and Art  as well as the Performing Arts will be taught on a “carousel” basis. Low attaining students will immediately benefit from intensive and individually tailored support programmes.

Key stage 4

Our core provision includes English, Maths, Science, ICT and Physical Education. From 2009, Religious Education, Citizenship, PSHE, Careers, Work Related Learning and Enterprise will be delivered as part of the Personal, Health, Social, Citizenship and Enterprise Education (PHSCEE) programme delivered from Year 9 onwards. This programme  will lead to accredited qualifications with GCSE equivalence. It is also our aim that all students leave with a recognised, accredited qualification in ICT.

Most learners will select a full BTEC First Diploma from a wide range of choices, with an alternative accredited pathway in place, at Level 1 and Entry Level for those unable to access such programme. These will be timetabled across a full day, allowing for the development of innovative and personalised approaches to learning and supporting the introduction of the new 14 – 19 Diplomas.

Examples of strategies to raise achievement

  • Policy of early entry in some subjects
  • Regular booster/revision classes
  • Deployment of “Academic Coaches”
  • Intensive support to targeted students
  • Develop an effective and accessible ICT link between home and school

Post 16

We are introducing an exciting initiative with Lincoln College at their purpose built campus in Gainsborough. This will see increasing developments at the college site, located one mile from our new building. Facilities include motor vehicle maintenance workshop, health and beauty studio and a substantial new construction suite. Plans are in place to extend facilities to deliver hospitality and catering training.  It is likely that on-going improvement in attainment and achievement will lead to growing demand locally for post 16 provisions, some of which will increasingly be delivered on our site. Our relationship with Queen Elizabeth’s High School will provide further
opportunities for our students to study post 16 courses locally.
