Our vision for teaching and learning is one based on:
-
Personalised and flexible approaches
-
Appropriate grouping, including setting by ability
-
A culture of high expectations and aspirations
-
Varied and challenging work
-
Involvement of students in the assessment process
-
Collaboration with partners in education, training and business.
Key Stage 3
Years 7, 8 and 9 study the following subjects: English, Maths, Science, ICT, Learning for Life (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship education), Humanities (RE, History and Geography separately), Modern Foreign Languages, PE and Technology. In most areas there is no longer the formal traditional cut-off point between Key Stages 3 and 4 at the end of Year 9. Instead, many students start GCSE and other awards, as appropriate, from the beginning of Year 9 onwards.
Key Stage 4
Years 10 and 11 study these core subjects: English, Maths, Science, ICT, Learning for Life (PSHE), Humanities (RE, History and Geography combined course), PE and Technology. They also choose an applied learning course to study for a day a week. There are over 15 subjects currently on offer both here at TVA and off-site college provision. We have also introduced the English Baccalaureate, making it possible for some students to study a Modern Foreign Language and History or Geography at GCSE to meet the new government requirements.
Examples of successful strategies used to raise achievement:
-
Policy of early entry in some subjects
-
Regular booster/revision classes
-
Deployment of “Academic Coaches”
-
Intensive support to targeted students
-
Developing an effective and accessible ICT link between home and school.
14-19 Education
As part of the Gainsborough Consortium, the academy plays a leading role in developing provision for 14-19 learning in the area. Our partnership with Lincoln College has made it possible to offer students aged 14-16 Vocational courses including Motor Vehicle maintenance, Construction and Hospitality. We are in the process of offering post-16 provision through this partnership in a range of areas including Sport, Performing Arts and Health and Social Care. If demand allows, we will then expand this provision to enable students to study a wide range of subjects without having to travel outside the Gainsborough area.
